There is a lack of snow cover on farm land across most of the southern grain belt.

There's really only one good thing that can come out of a lack of snowfall, according to Dale Risula Cropping Management Specialist at the Ag Knowledge Centre pests like grasshoppers, their mortality rate increases with the cooler temperatures but if there is an abundance of snow, they are protected by it.

Risula makes it clear, though.....we'd much rather have lots of snow and a few pests......than no moisture and...no pests.
Risula adds obiviously, the snow is needed for good runoff and soil moisture conditions in the spring and winter wheat and fall rye crops need some insulation.
