A memorial fundraiser in honour of local teen Kailynn Bursic-Panchuk, who died in a tragic train collision last August, was held this weekend.

Sandra LaRose is the mother of Kailynn. She wanted to give back to the Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon, which supported her and her family during Kailynn's stay in the hospital before her passing.

The memorial fundraiser held in Weyburn on Sunday was attended by family and friends, raising $2,700 for the Ronald McDonald House through raffles and donations. The event also featured cake and a butterfly release to celebrate the upcoming anniversary of Kailynn's passing (Aug. 22) and what would have been her 18th birthday (Aug. 21).

"She just had that sparkle, she just lit up a room, as her friends can all attest to," shared LaRose during the event. "We just have to keep that going."

LaRose has been busy keeping her daughter's memory alive. She has spoken at schools about the dangers of distracted driving, which she believes contributed to her daughter's death, and even took part in a campaign for SGI.

LaRose and her family plan to host a barbecue for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House on August 20 when they present the funds.

The Ronald McDonald House provides comfort and accommodation for families of sick children travelling to Saskatoon to receive medical treatment.
