The Saskatchewan RCMP have mobilized ahead of a planned protest in North Portal.

The protest, dubbed 'South Bound & Down - Convoy to North Portal' on social media last week, is expected to begin Friday.

There's a heightened police presence in the Estevan area along with North Portal and the surrounding area.

"Our goal for any demonstration is to utilize a measured approach," said the Saskatchewan RCMP in an emailed statement. "Extensive efforts are taken to engage with all stakeholders in the hopes that a peaceful resolution can be reached."

The Village of North Portal said in a Facebook post that they've been in communication with the RCMP. The post said travellers "can expect to be asked the purpose of their trip to North Portal during the duration of the event."

The RCMP anticipate that demonstrations could interrupt the flow of traffic.

"Our objective in policing any road closures/blockades is to work to restore the orderly flow of traffic in the safest manner possible."

The RCMP said they are not disclosing any operational details, to ensure their safety and the public's safety.

They also said they will work "with any involved parties to minimize the impact on the travelling public."

They advised checking for road closure information and monitoring local media for information and alternate routes. You can find road closures here.

The Canadian Border Services Agency said they constantly monitor their operations and are "ready to respond, with police of local jurisdiction if necessary, to any events impeding operations at ports of entry."

"The Agency is also continuously monitoring changes in demand and may allocate resources, adjust staffing levels and hours of service (if needed) to minimize processing times and potential delays."
