Monday was the opening day for white tail deer hunting here in Saskatchewan.

Larry Olfert with the Weyburn Wildlife Federation said the weather has kept most hunters from actually getting out there just yet.

"I wouldn't think very many of them were," he commented. "It's been pretty bad. Monday was so foggy and then after that the wind and the snow, and it's just not great. But I'm sure some people in some areas went out where they're the middle of nowhere or whatever."

He said while the deer have likely been mostly hunkering down as well, now that it's calmed down out there, the deer will come out looking for food.

Hunters are, of course, also looking for food.

"Moose and elk are awesome meats," he noted. "Moose is probably the best that we have enjoyed the best of the wild meats."

Olfert said while he and seven of his family members all applied but didn't get drawn for moose this year, when he does get large harvests, he swears by vacuum sealing for freshness.

"It's awesome, we do our fish that way, and our sausage that way, and everything stays so fresh in the in the vacuum packed," he noted. "It's a little bit of time and expense, but it's really, really worth it."

He said the Weyburn Wildlife Federation continues to help ensure locals can learn about hunting, angling, and trapping.

"We had a trapper education course actually a week ago, and somebody from the Trappers Association came down put on the course and they were full right up, I think we had about 15 or 20 people in it."
