A number of Weyburn residents last night captured stunning photographs of the northern lights visible in our local sky. One of those was Tammy Bell, who stayed up past her bedtime to go check out the aurora borealis in action.

"I was literally just getting ready for bed and I just looked on Facebook, kind of one last time, and I saw some friends mentioning that the Northern Lights were out, so I asked my 19-year-old daughter if she wanted to come for a drive with me to go check them out, and she's like, 'yeah, let's go'," she shared. "I couldn't really see them in town, so I knew that we had to get out of town."

Bell said they drove out into the country north east of Weyburn to a spot with no lights from farmyards.

"We shut the vehicle lights off, and we just sat there. We were probably out there for about 40 minutes and it was crazy because they would come and go like the intensity of them, and it was the wonder of them. It just was amazing. I had kind of seen them a few years ago, but nothing like that because I was just trying to watch from town and yeah, it was quite incredible."

She said the way the lights danced around the sky was not something that could be captured with a photo, and the only pictures she and her daughter got were with their phones.

"I'm glad we took the time to go, even though it was way past my bedtime," she chuckled. "When we were driving back, I was like trying to look back and I'm like, 'oh I don't want to miss any more, but I really gotta go to bed, too'. But I'm glad we were able to to capture something."

Bell added it was not only worth the late night, but also the drive into the country.

With a clear sky in the forecast, perhaps more locals will be out doing the same tonight.
