Just days after setting a new record, SaskEnergy set another one Friday for usage in a 24-hour period.

The Crown corporation measures the usage in a 24-hour period from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. In the 24-hour period that ended Friday morning, there had been 1.59 petajoules of natural gas consumed in the province. This broke the previous record of 1.57 petajoules on Tuesday.

A petajoule is a unit of measurement for natural gas, and is equal to one million gigajoules. The average home in Saskatchewan uses around 100 gigajoules a year.

This year marks the eighth in a row that the usage record for SaskEnergy has been matched or beaten. The increase in usage is attributed to residential, business and industrial customer growth. The increasing use of natural gas for power generation is also noted.
