The work started at the beginning of June, and now, the final phase of a months-long infrastructure project on 5th Street between Prairie and Coteau Avenues is about to start.

“We started out with curbs and gutters, so that has been all completed, and then the asphalt company came in, they dug down the road completely, then rebuilt the base and sub-base,” explained Jennifer Wilkinson, the Director of Engineering with the City of Weyburn.

After the work to rebuild the under-surface of the road, the final part is building the road surface itself, and that is expected to start on Monday.

We’re finally at that final lift where they’re going to come in with asphalt in the next week, and they will finish the street off and give it back to the neighbourhood.”

The work has resulted in 5th Street being closed for the majority of the time while they were working, which has provided some challenges for residents at times. With no back alleys on either side of 5th Street along that stretch, residents who didn’t have a driveway to park in had to make alternate arrangements.

“We appreciate their patience as I definitely know they have been dealing with the road closures and the lane restrictions, but we overly appreciate their cooperation in this,” Wilkinson added.

There has been a short pause in the work on 5th Street, with the final steps of levelling out the base taking place. This week, the street has been idle, without much activity. Wilkinson pointed out this has a lot to do with the efficiency of the crews.

“They’re just at another project,” she said of the crew who will be pouring and smoothing out the asphalt. “Those crews kind of move across to other projects in Saskatchewan, so we’re just waiting for the crew to wrap that project up and then they’ll come here.”

The work on 5th Street isn’t the only major project underway this summer in Weyburn. A major water main replacement project is in the final stages on Railway Avenue, while several sidewalk replacement projects are underway. As well, the work to rebuild and reshape the intersection of Highway 13 and 16th Street is expected to start on August 14th.
