While since classes ended, it's just the shell of the school it once was, many former students, staff and parents from over the years of Queen Elizabeth school yesterday visited the old school one last time.

Andy Dobson, Manager of Facilities and Transportation with the Southeast Cornerstone Public School Division, said they got in right before abatement is set to begin.

"We had a request from one of the RM Reeves that came through our board chair Audrey Trembley, so she reached out to me and fortunately enough we were able to have it hosted yesterday," he noted. "We sent it out on social media through our communications officer."

Dobson said they had around 150 to 160 attendees, including former staff, students and parents.

"Lots of reminiscing. Some folks even picked up some mementos that we couldn't repurpose to other schools in the school division, so it was a good time."

He said next on the agenda is the removal of hazardous materials, after which demolition will take place.

Dobson said he has received a few requests for bricks from the school as well.

"Our demolition vendor has agreed to set aside some bricks during the demo so if people are interested and they want to pick through some of the bricks," he said, noting it will be made known to the public as to when that opportunity will be.

Dobson added some may want the bricks for landscaping purposes, but others really just want one brick to put on the mantle as a keepsake.
