The snowfall that Weyburn received last week made things difficult for many in terms of getting around. In some parts of the city, some people were even finding it a challenge to get out of their houses or yard, and if they did, trying to drive anywhere was a whole different challenge all unto itself.

Despite these conditions, the Weyburn Police Service was still operating as normal, or at least as close to normal as they could get. They were responding to calls as they came in, despite the fact they were having to navigate two feet of snow on the streets.

“We did receive several calls for service, including vehicles being stuck in the snow and blocking the road,” explained Corporal Riley Doud. “We also had driving complaints on the highways where people were driving erratically in the snow conditions.”

The conditions on the street weren’t the only thing that the WPS handled in terms of snow-related calls. There was a bit of bylaw enforcement as well, Doud added.

“There were also several calls about snow removal – people moving snow onto other people’s property – as well,” Doud added. While the snow was making for a challenge, throughout the storm the police asked the residents of Weyburn to be cooperative and patient, something that overall, the people of the community were able to do.

Despite the snow, Doud stated police were able to get out and about, despite the at times knee-deep snow drifts that accumulated on some of the streets.

“It was quite hard to get around in the snow, but fortunately we were able to attend all calls for service that we received.”

Crews from the City of Weyburn were out throughout the storm as well, taking care of priority routes as well as trouble spots in the city. If needed, they were also able to help clear paths on otherwise near-impassable streets for emergency vehicles to get access.

With the largest snowfall in Weyburn’s history now behind us, Doud points to some positive developments in the making.

“I know the forecast looks good, so hopefully the weather cooperates and the snow all melts away.”
