The Weyburn Public Library is encouraging people of all ages to pick up a good book this Summer. Their annual Summer Reading Program opened registration for ages 3-12 today, and it is free to sign up online HERE. Alexis Christensen is excited for the program to return, with more prizes to be claimed for logged reading hours, weekly events at the Library, and a grand prize draw that is sure to have kids turning pages.

"It will blow their socks off, for sure. Let's just say it's something they'll be able to use after the program is over, through the streets of Weyburn!"

The Summer Reading Program runs from July 3rd until August 18th, with the Grand Prize Draw on August 21st. Each hour of reading logged will earn an entry into the Grand Prize Draw, along with one instant prize of the participant's choosing (maximum of 15 instant prizes). Christensen shared that the contest is not exclusive to Weyburn Residents, but that you will need to pick up the physical logbook from the Weyburn Public Library in order to participate.

Christensen added that there are many ways for children to earn their logged reading hours; "You can read digital books online, or you can listen to audio books through CDs [or streaming services]. If you have young children and they are not quite reading yet, parents can read to them, or children can read to parents. All of that counts!"

Although registration for the children's program is now open, the Public Library will be hosting a kick-off event on June 22nd to begin the teen and adult Reading Programs as well. There will be summer treats and family games in front of the Library from 4:00pm - 6:00pm that day, also offering the opportunity to ask any questions about the Program before registering. Christensen said there will be prizes for the teen and adult Reading Programs, as well as another source of motivation. "They are actually competing with the Estevan Branch to see who can read the most between Estevan and Weyburn!"

Although there is no official prize for this feat, one Weyburnite set the record last year for most hours logged in one summer.

"I had someone read 123 hours throughout the Summer, which was huge! It was pretty incredible how much they read."

Free registration for ages 3-12 in the Summer Reading Program, along with information regarding the weekly events, can be found HERE. Online registration is open from 9:30am - 5:30pm Mon-Fri, or you may register at the Weyburn Public Library at the Summer Kick-off Event on June 22nd.
