Our latest Player Profile for the Weyburn Red Wings is defenceman and #5 Tristian Petrie.

Petrie was acquired last season from the Nipawin Hawks and has proven to be a steady defensive presence for the Wings. The 20-year-old is in his final season of junior hockey and is hoping to make it a memorable one.

In his short Red Wings career, the defenceman has played in 36 games and counting. He's never been a guy to light up the scoresheet from the backend and has just one assist in his time in Weyburn. He does, however, bring size and grit to a team that has been pushed around the last few seasons. Petrie has a sense of his role and what he brings to the team.

"Physicality and a little rough and tough in my own end, or try to be. Just a physical presence on the ice all the time," he said.

Splitting time between the AJHL and SJHL over the past four seasons, the veteran has found a home with the Wings. He's enjoyed the being one of the older guys on the team.

"It's kind of nice not having the rookie chores and rookie duties. It's nice to have guys look up to you and being one of the older guys on the team you have a little more responsibility around the locker room and on the ice."

One of those responsibilities is being one of the enforcers on the team. Petrie has already shed the mitts a few times this season and believes he should protect his teammates if need be. The 20-year-old has racked up 55 penalty minutes in 10 games and had a spirited tilt in the crazy game against Flin Flon on October 13. He took on the bigger Leyson Coleman and arguably took the decision in the scrap.

Petrie has been in a few fights in his time but is on pace for a career high this season.

"I've had a couple, but this year I thought I could take on a more physical role with the team and try to spark the boys when I can, and stand up for my teammates when necessary," he said.

As his final junior hockey season gets into full swing, Petrie is looking forward to creating the everlasting friendships and thinks this team could make some noise come March.

"It's a great group of guys we have here. We've come together really really fast this year. Made a lot of memories already and looking forward to making more," he said.

"We need to get back to the right things, the little things. Cut down turnovers and play stronger defensively. We need to help our goalies out, they've been standing on their heads and we need to the little things again. I think we're definitely able to make a run for it once we get back to playing basic hockey."
