The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings were given a benchmark test on Tuesday night when the Humboldt Broncos came into Crescent Point Place, and a heavy shot total from the young Broncos overwhelmed the Wings to a 3-2 loss.

The Broncos and Red Wings both had an equal number of chances to start things off, but the Broncos got the first strike just over four minutes in. Max Gudnason took a shot that managed to squeak between arm and the body of Joseph Young who made his second start with the Red Wings. The puck walked the goaline before Reid Arnold was able to sneak in and poke the loose puck into the net to make it a one goal game.

Shortly after though, the Wings would tie things up when they started the breakout out of their own zone. Jevon Schwean chipped the puck up the boards where it was picked up by Tyson McLean and he brought it down the left side of the ice. His shot surprised everyone in the building when he snapped it under the blocker and over the pad of Broncos goaltender Brendan Foreman to tie the game just four minutes later.

The game before this one, Graham Skinner was denied his first goal of his SJHL career when he picked up a loose puck and snapped it off the corner of the post. At 12:49 in the first period, Skinner redeemed himself in almost the exact same situation after a shot from Braden Birnie ricocheted back to the point.

Just two minutes later, another defenceman got his first of the season, but for the other team. The Red Wings struggled to break out of their own zone, leaving it fairly open as Nicksha Eric picked up the puck at the line. He had a moving screen from the man who passed him the puck, Logan Kurki, and just as Kurki's body blocked the eyes of Young, the puck went by Young to tie the game up.

After one:

Weyburn 2 - 2 Humboldt, shots 15-9 Humboldt.

The second period didn't add much more to the game. Ben Hiltz was given a hooking call about halfway through the period, but the Broncos were not able to capitalize.

The Red Wings had a majority of the chance sin the first half of the period while the Broncos used that power play to figure things out a bit and get set to go for the second half, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.

After two:

Weyburn 2 - 2 Humboldt, shots 24-17 Humboldt.

The third period is where Humboldt started to take control. Within the first five minutes of the period, the Broncos already had seven shots on goal whereas the Red Wings never found theirs until the 10 minute mark, but it was too late.

The Broncos took the lead back just a moment after the halfway point when the Broncos started to cycle the puck around the offensive zone. After their first couple chances before the puck found its way to Kade Olsen. The defender walked in and snapped a wrist shot passed the glove, off the post and in the net behind Young to make it 3-2.

The Red Wings had a chance to come back a moment later. Just two minutes later, the Broncos sent Braiden Koran to the box when he crashed the crease a little too hard, and the Wings would get a chance on the power play. Unfortunately, the man advantage failed as the Red Wings scrambled to get set up into the zone.

Crunch time was starting to come for the Red Wings when they entered the final 2:49 of the game when Nick Dobson got a touch too aggressive in the offensive zone and got called for boarding. The Wings wouldn't get their goalie pulled until the final 30 seconds of the penalty kill, and the Red Wings would be forced to take the loss.

FINAL SCORE:

Weyburn 2 - 3 Humboldt, shots 42-20
