It has been quite the year for the House of Commons, having a federal election while being in the midst of a pandemic.

Souris—Moose Mountain MP Robert Kitchen said it has been a challenging year, with an increase in government spending, and more debt.

“We get to the summer, and we saw in Weyburn one of the first parades that we actually got going to where people could actually get out, and it was so nice to be able to get doing that a little bit more, and getting out and about.” Kitchen said. “And then all of a sudden, the Prime Minister calls an election and spent $600 million-plus on an election that no one wanted and basically gave the same outcome. He did it on the contention that the country was in dire crisis and this was the most important election since the 1940s.”

Kitchen hopes that the new year will be a more positive one, as he focuses on the challenges his constituents face.

“Our food prices are going up or oil and gas for our vehicles. The projections are saying that the average family will spend $1,000 more next year on just purchasing their food. Ultimately, we need to get people back to work. We need to get jobs going and get people functioning because that's what drives the economy.”
