Crews from the City of Weyburn were getting an earlier start to the snow removal season than they would have liked this week.

In all, the city has received roughly six centimetres of snowfall, with much of it blowing around, and drifting in areas. Combined with cooler than average temperatures, this has meant little melting, and a need for crews to work on clearing off the streets.

City Manager Mathew Warren explained, despite the earlier than normal start, it doesn’t change how the operations go.

“It’s a little earlier than we hoped for and I know a lot of residents weren’t hoping for it this early, but for us, we follow normal practices for the city,” Warren said. “Right now we’re looking at primary routes, then after that, we look at secondary routes for snow removal.”

With an earlier than expected start to the season, it means potentially more time spent on snow removal operations for the city. It is something the city builds into the snow removal budget for the year, however.

“We actually are on target for our snow removal for the year, so this has limited impact on us right now,” Warren added.

The city manager did point out, they are hoping for some nicer weather to come along and help with the removal of the snow the old-fashioned way - melting.
