When Terry Benning and Mel Hoffman headed out into the field earlier this week, they weren’t planning on running into moose. By the end of the day, they had captured photos and videos which went viral as a herd of the massive ungulate moved through the fields, avoiding the two men who were working.

Hoffman said they knew the moose were in the field when they began work for the day.

“We kind of noticed them when we first got onto the field,” Hoffman explained to AM1190’s Glenn Rogers Friday morning. “ We weren’t far into it and they were probably a good half mile away. You know, you could see them out there, and I’m taking snapchats and sending them to my family and they’re so far away you zoom in and it’s kind of jiggly. I never dreamt we would get as close as we did.”

Round number two. Can't believe how tame they seem.

Close they did get, with Benning having to slow the tractor down to almost walking speed to allow for the moose to get out of the way. In the videos captured by Benning and shared on social media, the moose were content to slowly keep their distance from the tractor.

The size of the herd was also quite the surprise.

“Seventeen of them,” exclaimed Hoffman. “There was, well, three cows, then 14 bulls. Some were bigger bulls. There were about three fairly sized bulls, then the rest were smaller.”

The moose did move out of the way of the tractor, and they eventually allowed Hoffman and Benning to finish their work.

“It was quite the herd, and it was quite the sight.”
