If you want to get some ice time in but don't belong to a sports team or a skating club, the City of Weyburn has options for free skating times for everyone at the Tom Zandee Sports Arena.

Program Manager with the City, Tina Clay, said the free public skating times have changed this year.

"Every Sunday we have a free skate sponsored by the Young Fellows Club of Weyburn, and that runs all the way until March 10th, and from 3:45 to 5:45 p.m.," said Clay. "In the past, we held it from 2:45 to 4:45 but we switched it this year to start at 3:45."

Skate with Santa this year will be held on Sunday, December 10th from 3:45 to 5:45 p.m.

On Sunday, December 24th and December 31st, the public skating time will be from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

During the Sunday afternoon skates, members of the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings will be on the ice as Skate Supervisors.

"There'll probably be two to four of them out there every Sunday, except for over the Christmas break, so it's a good chance to go and get to meet your Red Wings and have little kids go skate around with them and play with them too," Clay noted.

No sticks or pucks are allowed on the ice during public skating hours.

As for other ice time for the public, the City of Weyburn sponsors open ice time until March 15th on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m., excluding November 10th and December 25th.

Skate times during the holiday breaks will be from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m., on December 27th and 29th, January 3rd and 5th, as well as February 19th, 21st, and the 23rd.

"The difference between the skates is those Monday, Wednesday, Friday skates, we call them an 'open skate' time, so sticks and pucks are only allowed on the ice with parental supervision on the school days," explained Clay. "But if it's a PD day or there's no school, you have to adhere to the public skate rules, which is no sticks and no pucks on the ice."

For those who are still learning to skate, skating aids are available on the west side of the Tom Zandee Sports Arena.
