Over the last few years, the City of Weyburn along with a team of volunteers have taken one day in the summer to plant trees along the Tatagwa Trail. In 2021, the work was done along the East Coteau Trail, with 150 trees planted. Last year, north of River Park along the north shore of the Souris River, another 135 trees were planted. This year the event is making its return, again to River Park.

“We’re having Tatagwa Tree Day again this year,” explained Paige Tenbult. She is the Communications Coordinator for the City of Weyburn. “That’s where we go and plant trees as a part of our tree system within the city. She added that this year, the event will be held on the morning of August 12th.

The trees will be planted on the north side of the river. For those who are volunteering, it is recommended they enter the trails off New City Garden Road. There will be parking spaces marked off for those who are looking to help.

“We’re looking for about 50 people to participate because we have about 135 trees to be planted,” Tenbult continued. “So basically, that works out to be three trees a person.”

Tenbult cautioned the work is labour intensive, and with that in mind, she recommended those who are coming out to help to bring a hat, bring a water bottle, gloves and maybe even a chair to sit on to take a short break. And as there has been in years past, there will be some fun as well.

“We will be having, as every year, prizes that kind of promote outdoor activities,” Tenbult said, noting there will also be a barbecue for the volunteers who help plant the trees afterwards.

The work will start at 9:00 a.m. on August 12th, and it is expected to be wrapped up around 12:00 p.m.

Details on how to sign up to be one of the volunteers will be released in the coming days.
