As much as raking leaves may bug you, it mostly irks the insects, according to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC).

Holding off on the fall convention will help the critters living on your property, and give your lawn a boost too.

"A light covering of leaf litter on the lawn can be a critical component on providing a good layer of insulation from cold temperatures fluctuating over the winter months as these species are trying to hibernate," said Anja Sorensen, a program director with the NCC.

Sorensen added that it's not just the bugs beneath the ground that benefit from leaving leaves on the lawn.

"Those stalks and old plant materials can provide some really important habitat for insect species that are hibernating as well as a food source for those species who stay out all winter."

The NCC also says leaves provide a natural mulch as they break down, which helps enrich soil. As long as it's a light covering and not a thick buildup.
