A great way to socialize with the public, while helping out a much-needed local organization: the Weyburn Salvation Army's annual Christmas Kettles campaign has still got time slots available for the final two weekends before Christmas.

Two-hour volunteer shifts need to be filled on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

While jingling the bells and handing out candy canes is fun, it's also never been easier to work a kettle shift, with their new - in recent years - 'tap' feature available for those who don't have cash on hand but still want to donate.

A little time spent volunteering at a Christmas kettle, which are only being featured in Weyburn this year at Walmart and the Wholesale Club, can ensure more donations come in for the food bank.

"The funds raised are utilized by our Food Bank here in Weyburn," said Community Ministries Worker, Nicole Strickland. "It's our main fundraiser for the year, and it is what keeps our food bank open all year round. We've set our goals a little bit higher this year, due to the fact that our [service] numbers are higher as well, so we're really hoping that we meet them."

She said you can sign up by calling their office at 306-842-2280, and you don't need experience or any special skills to help them out - however, if you do happen to enjoy sharing your singing or musical talent, you are certainly welcome to unofficially 'busk' to help out a worthy cause.

"We are looking for anybody. If you don't feel like you can stand for two hours, we can provide a chair. If there are students that need volunteer hours for school, we welcome them. If you have a friend, you and your friend want to volunteer together, that's more than welcome," Strickland encouraged.

"We have some people that enjoy playing music while they volunteer. We have some that have the kettle outside and they goof around and interact with people. Everyone is welcome."

So many more families need access to the food bank in December, but their shelves have a strong need to be replenished on an ongoing basis year-round. In fact, in a previous interview, Strickland said the food bank moves about 10,000 pounds of food through its doors in any given month.

"A very rough estimate is around 2,000 to 2,500 pounds a week, because we give 55 pounds for one to two people and 75 for three, plus we do anywhere from seven to 12 a day, five days a week," she shared.

Sign up for your kettle shift and bring a friend to make it more fun.
