Two separate incidents involving impaired driving were handled by the Weyburn Police Service Sunday night. One of the incidents was on Government Road South, the other was in a yard near the Weyburn Golf Course.

The first incident happened when the police received a call about an unwanted guest. When the police arrived, the suspect had already left. They did, however, return to the scene while the police were still there. Officers would give the 60-year-old man an alcohol screening test, and it resulted in criminal charges for impaired driving.

“We find that off and on, especially if there been a little incident or an accident, they come back to the scene just to see if the police arrived or what happened,” explained Weyburn Police Service Sergeant Shane St. John about the suspect returning while under the influence. “Sometimes it’s their conscience gets the best of them and they’re not thinking properly anyway, as they’re impaired”

The second incident was in assistance with the RCMP. A call had come in from a property owner regarding a suspicious vehicle in a yard near the golf course.

“You never know with property and property offences, especially that we have a lot going around,” Sgt. St. John said. “The property owner was very aware and called police, so they’re not taking anything into their own hands.”

Officers from the WPS were close so they responded as did the RCMP. The suspect vehicle was found, and while it wasn’t determined what they were exactly up to, the police did determine the driver – a 17-year-old girl – was to be drinking alcohol. Officers administered a mandatory alcohol screening and it came back as a warning. However, given their age, they face some serious repercussions.

"They still had their vehicle impounded and they’ll lose that for some time, and they’ll lose their license for quite a few months,” Sgt. St. John said of the tickets issued. “Just even having that warning, you have zero tolerance under 21.”
