The U18 AAA Richardson Pioneer Gold Wings were looking to avenge their loss Saturday to the Prince Albert Northern Bears when they took to the ice Sunday afternoon. The two teams would combine for nearly 100 shots on goal in a goaltending duel that would last nearly 70 minutes, with the Gold Wings ultimately coming away with a 4-3 victory.

The game started out with the Bears jumping to an early lead, scoring two goals in the span of 29 seconds late in the first period. Brooklin Fry scored her second goal of the weekend on the power play with 5:09 left in the first, and then Sasha Malenfant would tally with 4:40 to play.

In the second period, the goaltenders would be the ones standing tall, with Weyburn’s Lexi Peace and Prince Albert’s Brooke Archer turning aside all of the shots they faced. Things would change in the third, though.

Just 1:20 into the period, Hailey Verhelst would score her second goal of the season to make it a 2-1 game. Her goal was assisted by Sydney Dauvin and Ashton Bender. Just moments later, it would become a tie game as Jacey Ziebart found the back of the net at the 3:07 mark, assisted by Julianne Girardin and Rilynn Dobson.

Then, two goals in just over a minute would change the entire game.

The first goal was scored with 2:55 left on the clock, as Paisley Arntsen gave the Gold Wings the lead. She was assisted on the goal by Girardin and Dobson. The lead would only last until there was 1:30 to go in regulation when Sophia Zuck scored to make it a 3-3 game, forcing overtime.

In the first overtime period, neither team was able to score, forcing the teams to play a second overtime. In the extra time, Dauvin would prevent the game from having to go from a shootout when she scored with 36 seconds to play, giving Weyburn their second win of the season.

The Gold Wings will be looking to ride the momentum from the win when they are back in action Saturday. They host the Saskatoon Stars at Crescent Point Place.
