The U18 Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Gold Wings are busy preparing for their upcoming season, and will even get onto the ice today to begin practicing.

The Gold Wings will then be going on a team-building retreat at Buffalo Pound this weekend, having two ice sessions on Monday, and heading to Swift Current on Friday, September 9th for their first tournament.

“We have 17 young female athletes, and they all moved to Weyburn, except two of them, we have two local kids,” Head Coach Chandy Kaip said. “They all moved yesterday into their billet homes, and we started out with the rink tour, a school tour, and then we had a very large coming together connection pool party that involved the athletes, their families, their billet families, and then all the coaches and some of the Goldwing committee.”

Kaip said the great sense of community in Weyburn drew her to this city, and to get back into coaching.

“The development and focus on developing the female hockey have been incredible, and so many young families and so many people trying to make sure that we can really keep evolving and having great programs from U13 female all the way up to the gold wings.”

Their first league game is on October 1st at 7:30 p.m. in North Battleford, and their home opener is on October 8th at 7:30 p.m. against Swift Current.
