The Weyburn Police Service last Wednesday got a complaint from a local business reporting a theft. However, video surveillance of the store was provided, and thanks to the public’s assistance on social media, a man was identified and charged accordingly and released with an upcoming court date

"With a lot of our cases, the more the public can help, whether it be identifying the person or just providing tips, we always welcome any assistance with the public," said Constable Preston Roy. "Sometimes people feel comfortable spreading information through social media."

He said people who have a surveillance camera on their private property can help police with their investigations.

"Whether it happens at night or else the time where nobody's around, sometimes that video evidence is so important, so we always appreciate the public's assistance with the files that we incur in our community here," explained Roy.

"We get lots of people offering their footage when they find something that would be useful to us, and we always encourage that. With technology getting cheaper and cheaper, it's becoming more affordable for people to get camera systems, so it offers some peace of mind, a deterrent to people to maybe come onto the property. So anytime people have that ability to install cameras, we always encourage that."
