The Weyburn Police Service (WPS) had a busy week from Feb. 26 to Mar. 5.

The biggest highlight from the most recent police report was the conclusion of a six week investigation resulting in five arrests.

On Mar. 5, the five individuals arrested were charged with a total of 40 drug and criminal code offences.

Another drinking and driving charge laid in Weyburn.

On Feb. 26, a 36-year-old man was arrested for impaired driving and over .08 after police pulled a vehicle over, noticing the driver was displaying signs of alcohol impairment.

The WPS said the man was released from custody and will be making his first court appearance at a later date.

The traffic spotlight for Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) and police across the province is on distracted driving. On Mar. 2, the WPS conducted a short traffic blitz focused on cellphone use.

Over the two-hour period, three tickets were issued. Tickets for this offence are $280, as well as demerit points on your driver's license.

The WPS said in its latest police report: "Distracted driving continues to be a leading factor in accidents, so please put your cell away and pay attention to the road while driving.

"Is that text or phone call really worth a $280 fine, or possibly worse?"

A number of accidents also taking place on Weyburn roads throughout the week.
