The summer is the time of year children are out and about, trying to get as much time in the sun and playing with friends as possible before the start of the school year in September. With the kids of Weyburn enjoying the season, a reminder from the Weyburn Police Service.

Deputy Chief Brent VanDeSype advised that once children are of an age they can remember them, ensure they know their address, phone number or means of contacting their parents. He stressed the reminder after an incident last week.

“A resident notified us, said that she had spotted a little girl and had a chat with her, and learned she was lost,” VanDeSype explained. “She couldn’t provide the resident with the name or address or any contact information for their parents.”

Officers arrived on the scene and were able to provide assistance.

“Luckily, the officers that attended had recognized the little girl, and knew the parents, or knew how to contact the parents, so they were reunited with no further incident.”

Calls regarding children being lost aren’t too frequent to the Weyburn Police Service, VanDeSype added.

“When we come across something like that, or it’s brought to our attention, we can only imagine that the parents are quite worried and a little bit frantic,” VanDeSype said. “The best thing they can do is contact us, let us know and possibly we already are aware of where the child is, or have the child with us.”

The deputy chief noted parents generally do their best to be aware of where their children are, but sometimes they do, whether inadvertently or on purpose, wander off. With that in mind, children should always let their parents know where they are, and parents should keep tabs on their children as best as they can.
