You won't want to skip the new exercise program at the Wheatland Senior Centre.

Held every Monday at 10:00 a.m. for an hour, "Let's Get Physical" is a senior-focused exercise program developed in collaboration with the Wheatland Senior Centre, the Saskatchewan Health Authority, and in partnership with the Weyburn Caravan Society and the City of Weyburn.

Theresa Istace, President of the Wheatland Senior Centre, said the program has been developed with grants from the Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism, which makes it possible for members of the Wheatland Senior Centre to take part in the exercise program for free.

"We started out with about 12 [participants] and now we're up to just about 18. Anybody's welcome to come and see what we're about."

Istace said that the program mostly focuses on chair exercises, and is low-impact.

"They're not too heavy. You can stand, and you can sit and it's mostly chair. We use weights for our hands and we also can use weights for our ankles, it's up to every person themselves."

The participants follow along to an exercise video that Laurie Schmidt with the Saskatchewan Health Authority sets up, and Istace said that they are in consultation with the city of Weyburn in regards to an in-person instructor.

The feedback has been great, Istace said. "This morning we even had another lady come to join us, so that's good."

The program is a way for seniors in the community to get some physical activity as well as social interaction with other participants.

The drop-in fee for non-members is $4.
