As for when an outbreak is declared over, it takes a determination by the local Medical Health Officer.

Dr. Lanre Medu is the Medical Health Officer for southeast Saskatchewan. Discover Weyburn reached out to the Saskatchewan Health Authority for clarification on when Dr. Medu would declare an outbreak over. While he wasn’t available for an interview, he did provide a response via email.

Dr. Medu stated any outbreak can only be declared over by the Medical Health Officer. “Such declarations are made after the standard 28-day period has passed after the onset of the last case that had the potential to contribute to transmission,” he added

In the response, Dr. Medu also advised that just because an outbreak is declared over, it doesn’t mean there are no COVID-19 cases within the community.

“The public is reminded that during the pandemic, it is important to continue to take precautions to protect yourself, your families and everyone who lives in your community.”

The first outbreak in Weyburn was declared at the South Wing of the Weyburn Special Care Home on December 27th, and a second outbreak was declared at the Weyburn General Hospital on December 29th. On January 8th, an outbreak was also declared at the North Wing of the Weyburn Special Care Home. The most recent declaration of an outbreak happened on January 25th at Crocus Plains Villa.
