This winter has been filled with moose roaming into populated areas right across the southeast.

"I can honestly say that we've probably had more moose occurrences this year than we've had than I ever can remember," said Lindsey Leko, a conservation officer in Weyburn.

Leko estimates there's been around 20 moose that have made their way into the Weyburn area in this past winter alone. He thinks it's probably a similar number in Estevan, if not higher. And he has a theory for why there so many moose this year.

"I think what's been bringing the moose into these populated areas is the weather we've been having," he said. "We've had a couple nasty storms, we've had some blowing snow, and the moose are seeking cover. Everyone thinks they want the food...it's the cover with the city of Estevan, town of Fillmore, town of Lampman, Bienfait, that's what they're looking for."

"And if they can get a free meal while they're there, and if they're comfortable and they're not being bothered, that's what they'll do."

He added that moose have often been in rural farmyards as well, not just towns and cities, through out the winter.
