The Remembrance Day long weekend is sure to be a challenging one for drivers. Winter-like weather is settling over the southeast, making travel difficult. Drivers may also find themselves involved in a police check-stop.

"We encourage drivers to be patient as they pass through them," stated Tyler McMurchy, manager of media relations for SGI. "Police at these check-stops will be watching for infractions like impaired driving, distracted driving, drivers and passengers not wearing their seatbelts and, of course, vehicles that are speeding."

With two to four centimetres of snow expected in the Weyburn area today, winter driving conditions are being reported on area highways, including blowing and drifting snow. McMurchy reminds drivers to be cautious and remember that the posted speed limits are for ideal driving conditions.

"So, if things are snowy, icy, or visibility os poor, you'll need to adjust your speed and increase your following distance as well so you have plenty of time to react."

Drivers must use their headlights in low light conditions and poor visibility, even during the day. McMurchy also reminded drivers to pay attention to the road.

"Winter driving is complicated enough without the distractions, so people should keep in mind they need to put down the phone and avoid anything else that might distract them and take away their attention from the safe operation of that motor vehicle," said McMurchy. "Distracted driving will get you a $280 ticket and four points off your license, so put your phone away and just drive.'
