With the increase in gas prices, comes an increase in gas thefts, according to the Weyburn Police Service.

Officers have cautioned gas stations as they’ve seen a surge in gas thefts over the past two weeks.

“We’ve spoken to gas stations in Weyburn, and just making them aware to be careful and diligent,” Sergent Shane St. John of the Weyburn Police Service said.

One of their main recommendations to the gas stations was to take payments upfront.

“I think they might have some different rules where they might have to go through their head offices, but that was definitely our suggestion is to get payments upfront before fueling a vehicle up.”

He said that the gas stations in Weyburn have good security cameras.

“The biggest thing we'd want to look for is plate numbers, description, anything important that would help us identify the person because if everybody has cameras now, we will post it on our website and on Facebook for the public's assistance in identifying the possible suspects.”

St. John added that even though the price for gas is high, getting a criminal code charge for stealing fuel would be a lot more expensive in the long run.
