The City of Weyburn saw a lot happen over the past 12 months. From the start of construction of the new hospital to several infrastructure projects getting underway to the successes of the various athletes from Weyburn, Mayor Marcel Roy is looking back on the past year as a good one.

“We as a city, ourselves and our city administration, and the people working for the city, we had a lot of stuff accomplished this year for infrastructure,” noted Roy as the first on his list. Some of the major projects included the complete teardown and re-surfacing of 5th Street, and the rebuilding of the intersection at 16th Street and 1st Avenue.

A new piece of equipment acquired by the city was also something Roy touted as important, and for motorists in the city, it could be perhaps one of the biggest things acquired by the city in recent years.

“We made some change-ups in how we’re going to deal with the potholes,” Roy explained. “We had the pothole machine that I thought was really good, but it had the drawback of bringing in hot asphalt all the time. Now, we changed it out with probably no money loss. We got the one that uses infrared rays, and we melt the asphalt and refill the potholes.”

Roy also pointed to the excitement around the community with the work at the new hospital underway. While the City of Weyburn isn’t responsible for the construction of the hospital, he mentioned the ancillary work the city did help with, such as the water lines.

“Basically the hospital is moving forward, and we’re seeing progress in the hospital, although it’s going to be a couple of years out.”

The reputation Weyburn is developing athletically is also something Roy wanted to focus on for 2023. In the past 12 months, athletes from Weyburn have captured some of the top honours in the province, and in some sports, the world.

“The other thing that I think that is very exciting in Weyburn, but I think people are missing, is what our junior sports teams, what they’ve done for the city here,” Roy said. Some of the accomplishments in the past 12 months include the Weyburn Comprehensive School Football team not only winning the provincial title but being crowned the unofficial National Champions by CanadaFootballChat.com. Then, earlier this month, Weyburn’s Ty Mason was part of the Team Canada West that captured the gold medal at the World Junior A Challenge in Truro Nova Scotia.

Those accomplishments were accompanied by success for Weyburn teams in hockey, baseball, basketball, volleyball and more over the past year.

While the past year was filled with highlights, Roy did note there were some challenges over the past 12 months as well.

While crime was up, according to Roy, the Weyburn Police Service was more than capable of handling the concerns. As well, the city’s public works department was up to the task of handling issues with the City of Weyburn’s infrastructure when they arose.

As for 2024, there is a lot Roy is looking forward to, including continued work on the infrastructure as well as the upcoming municipal election which is scheduled for November.
