The Weyburn Beavers opened their annual Alberta road swing Thursday night, and they did so in a commanding fashion. They built up an 11-0 lead after the top of the fifth inning and held on to beat the Brooks Bombers 12-4.

The Beavers offence was lead by Corey Harrell, and Wade Weinberger. Harrell had two RBI and a home run, while Weinberger had three RBI and a home run. Corey Wheaton also with a strong night at the plate, going 3-for-6, with an RBI and a run.

On the mound, Chase Thometz threw six strong innings, striking out six. While he allowed four runs, only two were earned, helping to keep his ERA below two on the season. Brodie Stairs threw two innings in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two. Ken Williams pitched the ninth.

The Beavers came out firing on all cylinders in Brooks. It started with a two-run home run by Harrell with two outs in the first inning. Weyburn would continue to add to the lead in the second, thanks to some errors by the Brooks fielders.

Weyburn loaded up the bases, and Felix Correa came up to the plate. He was walked, bringing on one run. Then, Keaton Greenwalt, thanks to an error by the third baseman, cleared the bases and found himself on third base. Due to the error, though, Greenwalt didn’t receive credit for cashing in the three runs.

The third inning saw the runs continue, with Weinberger bringing home Drake Pilat with a single to left.

Down 7-0, Brooks finally held the Beavers off the board in the fourth inning, but Weyburn made up for it in the fifth.

After a passed ball put runners on second and third, Pilat brought home Greenwalt with a single to left. Omar Prieto, the next batter, then cashed in Harrell with a single. The two runs would spell the end of the night for pitcher Tyler Whalen.

The Brooks starter lasted 4 ⅓ innings, striking out four, and allowing 10 runs on eight hits while walking three. Quentin Kopjar came on in relief, and the Beavers did what they have been doing all season long, scoring on the relievers.

The second batter Kopjar faced was Wade Weinberger, who took the second pitch he faced in the at-bat over the fence. The two-run blast put the Beavers up 11-0.

The Bombers finally broke the shutout bid of Thometz in the bottom of the fifth. With bases loaded, a sacrifice fly to right field brought in a single run.

In the bottom of the sixth, Brooks put three runs on the board, including a shot from Riley MacDonald. The slugger from North Vancouver leads the WMBL with 12 home runs on the season.

The Beavers would add one more run, in the seventh, with a single to centre from Wheaton, which brought in Cam Williams.

The two teams meet again on Friday. The Beavers are looking to turn their win into the start of another streak, while the Bombers are searching for ways to climb out of the cellar of the WMBL West Division.
