The last weekend will likely mark the busiest one of the year for teams in the Big Six Hockey League as a combined eight games were played between playoffs and provincials.

In provincial play, Carnduff and Carlyle were eliminated while Wawota completed a thrilling comeback to advance. Bienfait lost on Friday and will play a winner-take-all on Monday night in Milestone.

In playoffs, two teams are now one win away from clinching a berth in the Big Six semi-final round.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10

Playoffs

The Wawota Flyers defeated the Midale Mustangs 5-1 in the first game of their Best-of-5 quarterfinal series.

Game 2 goes Wednesday night back in Midale. That game will be broadcast on CJ1150 and discoverestevan.com beginning at 8:00.

Provincials

The Bienfait Coalers went on the road for Game 2 of their Best-of-3 Provincial 'A' series with the Milestone Flyers.

After Bienfait WON 2-1 IN DOUBLE-OT in the opener, Milestone responded with a 4-1 win on Friday night.

Game 3 is set for Monday night back in Milestone. The winner will advance to take on the defending Provincial 'A' champion Bethune Bulldogs in the next round.

The Carlyle Cougars hosted Game 1 of their Provincial 'C' series against Ochapowace on Friday, where the visitors left with a 10-4 victory. That meant Carlyle would return on Saturday night down by six goals in the total-point series.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11

Provincials

The Wawota Flyers returned home to host Theodore in Game 2 of their two-game total-point series on Saturday. Theodore won the opener 5-1, meaning the Flyers would have to win by five goals in the rematch to advance.

With under two minutes left in the game, Wawota led 4-1 but still trailed in the series by one goal. Then, the Flyers' Brent Struble scored with the clock winding down to force overtime.

In the first 10-minute overtime period, with less than two minutes to go yet again, Wawota's Justin Lamontagne scored the game-winner to win the total-point series 7-6 for the Flyers and vaulting them into the next round of Provincial 'C' playoffs.

Wawota will take on Whitewood in the next round.

The Carnduff Red Devils also returned home on Saturday night, looking to make up a two goal deficit to Grenfell after the Spitfires won the opener 6-4.

Carnduff were up 2-0 in Game 2 after two periods to tie the series. However, Grenfell scored twice to tie the game and retake a two-goal series lead.

Carnduff scored to bring the series within a goal once again, only to see Grenfell respond a go up by two in the series. A furious push by the Red Devils at the end of the game wouldn't pay off, as Grenfell scored an empty-netter to win the game 4-3 and the series 10-7.

Carlyle travelled to Ochapowace for Game 2 on Saturday. Despite a hat-trick for the Cougars' Brett Turgeon, Ochapowace won 9-4 and took the series by a 19-8 margin.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 12

Playoffs

The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings made the trek east to take on the Carnduff Red Devils on Sunday night in Game 2 of their Best-of-5 quarterfinal series.

Yellow Grass won the opener 5-2 on home ice on February 9th so Carnduff was looking to even the series at the Fast Centennial Arena.

Trevor Geiger scored in the first period to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead after the first period.

Then with less than five minutes left in the second period, there would be three goals scored in 55 seconds.

First, Brendan Vertefeuille scored on the powerplay to tie the game at 1-1. Just 12 seconds later, Nico Anderson scored for Carnduff to give them back the lead at 2-1. And just 43 seconds after that, Matt Dreis scored for Yellow Grass to once again even the score at 2-2.

In the final period, it would remain 2-2 until six minutes left in regulation. Off a faceoff win, Wheat Kings' captain Justin Richter pounced on a rebound and roofed it to give Yellow Grass their first lead of the night at 3-2.

Carnduff would pull the goalie and earn a powerplay with 1:20 remaining for a chance to tie the game. However, Yellow Grass were able to score two empty-net goals to ice the game and win 5-2.

The Wheat Kings' now lead the series 2-0 and can sweet away Carnduff on Wednesday back at the Communiplex in Yellow Grass.

The Bienfait Coalers traveled down Highway 18 for Game 2 of their Best-of-5 series with the Oxbow Huskies. Bienfait won the opener at home 5-2 on February 7th.

With only 11 skaters, the Coalers would still open the scoring as Tyson Price found the back of the net to give Bienfait a 1-0 lead after one.

Bienfiat would go up 3-1 after two periods after goals by Dylan Herzberg and Dallas Kickley while Corey Fitzpatrick responded for Oxbow.

Ryan Curzon would get the Huskies within one by scoring six minutes into the third period. However, just 16 seconds later, Kyle Garagan scored for Bienfait to restore their two-goal lead.

Blaine Herzberg scored an empty-netter to give Bienfait another 5-2 win over Oxbow. The Coalers can end the series Friday night back in Bienfait in Game 3.
