Weyburn’s Ben Hiltz has been invited to the selection camp for Canada West, for the World Junior A Challenge. The camp is set to go in Calgary from December 2nd to 5th.

The World Junior A Challenge sees six teams, two from Canada, the United States, Switzerland, Russia and the Czech Republic, play a tournament in Truro, Nova Scotia this year. It features players 19 and under who play junior A hockey. Canada West will comprise of players from the SJHL, AJHL, BCHL, MJHL, and SIJHL. The tournament runs from December 10th to 16th.

Hiltz, in his second year with the Red Wings, has 26 points in 21 games, including 12 goals. He has also notched five power-play goals and one shorthanded goal. This is his first invite to the Canada West selection camp.

In total, there were nine players from the SJHL invited to the selection camp. They include goaltender Jacob Wasserman from the Humboldt Broncos, Notre Dame defenseman Tim Gould, Levi Kleiboer from the Battlefords, Nipawin’s Josh McDougall, forward Chrystopher Collin from Flin Flon, Jared Hamm from Notre Dame, Michael McChesney out of Estevan, and Yorkton’s Chantz Petruic.

One name absent from the list, which surprised many in the community, was Red Wings rookie Cade Kowalski. He is currently the top scoring rookie in the SJHL.
