Jake Wozney picked up a hat trick, Connor Burk scored twice, and Carson Rose extended his point streak to seven games, as the Weyburn Red Wings routed the La Ronge Ice Wolves 9-2 Saturday night. The offensive outpouring by the Wings was the highest goal total by the team in the past three seasons, and helped move them into a three-way tie for sixth overall in the SJHL. Weyburn is now locked in a three way tied for sixth overall in the SJHL iwth the Yorkton Terriers and Notre Dame Hounds, with all three teams having 53 points.

The two teams skated to scoreless tie at the end of the first period, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying by the Red Wings. The ice was tilted towards Luke Lush, the La Ronge goaltender, for much of the game, and it was evident in the opening period. Weyburn put 16 shots on him, none managing to get past him. At the other end, the Ice Wolves put six shots on Carter Phair, although only two of them were quality chances.

The Wings would open the scoring in the second period, when Ben Hiltz scored his fourth of the season five minutes in. Cody Chasse was credited with the assist. Just under two minutes later, Jacob Wozney would score his first of the game, with linemates Cole Woodliffe and Carson Rose setting him up. Weyburn continued to pour it on, when 90 seconds later, Ian Parker notched his 15th of the season unassisted.

The Wings would open it up to a 4-0 lead in the second half of the period, when Wozney scored his second, with Rose and Woodliffe setting him up once again. The shutout wouldn’t last long, though, as 28 seconds later, during a scramble at the top of the Red Wings crease, Curtis Peck put a loose puck past Phair. The teams would head to the dressing room after the first 40 minutes with Weyburn up 4-1.

The Wings would regain the momentum in the opening minutes of the third, when Blake Dempsey scored his first of the season, taking a feed from Carson Rose, and tapping it in past Lush. Ty Brown would then make it a 6-1 game when he cut across the top of the crease two minutes later, and beat the Ice Wolves goaltender.

Weyburn wasn’t done scoring, as Connor Burk notched his third of the year, with Ian Parker picking up his third point of the game, and Jamieson Ree his second assist. Wozney then completed the hat trick 20 seconds later, assisted by rookie blueliner Carson Scheschuk. After the goal, a change in net, but it was the Red Wings who made the change. Carter Phair came to the bench, and in his place, Jake MacLennan finished the game. The move allowed the native of Yarmouth, Maine, to play in front of his parents, who were in town for the Red Wings Parents weekend.

Just past the halfway mark of the third period, Connor Burk was sprung free on a breakaway. As he crossed the blueline, he was hauled down by the Ice Wolves defender, and referee Keith Salomon awarded him a penalty shot. Burk came in over the blue line, then cut over the right side, bringing it back in front, and with a fancy little deke, beat Lush.

The scoring wasn’t over for the game, but it was the Ice Wolves who would score the last goal of the game. Derek Patter would beat MacLennan for this first of the season, but by then, the decision was already a foregone conclusion.
