City Council discussed the Police Commission Board Bylaw at last weeks meeting.

The purpose of the Commission is to give direction to the City Police with how to carry out general policies. The Commission also submits the budget to City Council with the estimate of how much the Commission and Police service need each year.

The Police Commission Board, which meets once a month, consists of the Chair, two city counsellors and two members of the public.

The motion was made to change the Bylaw of the Commission Board to add two extra members to the Commission from the general public.

"It just opens up a wider variety of people that can get their input into how Weyburn is run," said Mayor Marcel Roy.

"We felt that this would give the citizens of Weyburn more opportunity to be a part of policing in Weyburn, some of the decisions that are made and also to have a larger voice on the board of Police Commissions, and what takes place," explained Mel van Betuw, City Counsellor and member of the Police Commission Board, during the meeting.

Mayor Roy also said how sometimes there are people that are away and the extra bodies on the Board will enable meetings to continue with enough people present.

During the Council meeting, Mayor Roy told the council that Saskatoon has added positions for their Police Commission Board for the same reasoning.

The motion was passed.
