With municipalities across Canada officially declaring the cancellation of community gardens this year, some may be wondering what will be happening in Weyburn.

The question was posed at last night's virtual ZOOM meeting of Weyburn City Council; will the community gardens be open this spring for those who depend on the public space to grow their food?

"We haven't closed the community gardens, but we are asking people to follow the restrictions put in place [by the province]," explained City Manager Mathew Warren explained. "Right now, it's considered a park space, so we're telling people not to use those spaces until we have more of an idea about restrictions being lifted by the province. Right now we're just following the restrictions with regard to physical distancing, so it's not closed, but we're following the protocols that way."

With not a lot more to do than plan a garden, the verdict is still out for those who have one of the roughly 60 plots in Weyburn's community gardens, and whether they'll be growing in those spaces this year.

"We're cautiously optimistic that things will turn around, and we'll be able to open up our parks and play spaces again to the public, but I guess I don't have a hundred percent clear answer for you at this time," said City Leisure Services Director Andrew Crowe. "It's something that's on our radar and we're looking at and we're hoping to open to the public, but we don't have a for-sure answer as to yes or no at this time."
