Landmark Cinemas who owns Weyburn's Soo Theatre is being purchased by Kinepolis Group, a company based in Belgium.

The deal still needs government approval but when completed could mean new investments made into Landmarks Theatres.

"The immediate view is there is no change to the theatres. Long term we see it as a big opportunity for the Canadian consumer because of their whole thesis essentially, to invest outside of Europe and continue to improve the movie-going experience," said Bill Walker, Chief Operations Officer, Landmark Cinemas Canada.

"We see it as an opportunity where the company will continue to grow and that will create opportunities for us to make investments and improving the movie-going experience in all of our communities," he added.

Weyburn Movie-goers are asking what difference this purchase deal means for the Weyburn theatre.

"We would acknowledge that there are opportunities to have a better movie-going experience in Weyburn and so I don't want to mislead and say that that leads to a new theatre or new multiplex of some sort but there are ways that we can make it better and there are investments we can make. As the company continues to grow and is successful in Canada we would see opportunities in Weyburn to make it a better experience."

"What I think what we would be able to bring to Weyburn really is a better more comfortable seating experience. The projection is already a quality, digital new projection but I'm sure there's an opportunity to improve the screen and the picture quality and improve the overall comfort and seating experience and just give that facility an overall refresh," explained Walker.

The deal is expected to be completed by the end of 2017 costing Kinepolis Group $123 million.
