Overhanging trees and shrubs can become a nuisance when it comes to public property.

The City of Weyburn has a bylaw in place to ensure places like sidewalks, streets and alleys are clear of these kinds of blockages.

"Usually a notice is sent to the homeowner saying 'look you're in contrivention with this particular section of the bylaw please rectify it,'" says Inspector Rod Stafford with the Weyburn Police Service. "If that is done then that's all that amounts to it, there's no fine or anything."

However, failure to remove the tree or shrub overhanging on public property can lead to the City of Weyburn coming to trim or remove it at the homeowners expence.

When it comes to trees or shrubs encringing on private property, each situation can be very different.

"We always take those as a case by case thing because they really are sometimes difficult to interpret," says Stafford. "So we would never kind of send out a blanket policy saying you know, you are at free will to cut out anything in your
yard."

Whether it's an overhang issue on public or private property the Weyburn Police Service ask that you contact them with any questions or concerns.
