babyfoodrecallfeb9A food recall has been issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for PC Organics brand baby food pouches. The pouches could allow for the growth of Clostridium Botulinum, which is the bacteria responsible for botulism. Loblaw Companies explained an error in the manufacturing process resulted in excess water in the product, which under certain circumstances, could support the growth of the bacteria, and pose a health risk.

The products were sold in Weyburn at the Real Canadian Wholesale Club. Other stories in Saskatchewan where it may have been sold include Extra Foods, Loblaws City Market, No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore, Your Independent Grocer, Shoppers Drug Mart and affiliated independent stories.

The CFIA recommends, if you have purchased the product, to throw it out, or return it to the store where it was purchased.

If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, call your doctor. Food contaminated by the toxin may not look or smell spoiled, but can still make you sick. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, blurred or double vision, dry mouth, respiratory failure and paralysis. In severe cases, people may die.

The recall was triggered by a consumer complaint, and the CFIA is checking to ensure the recalled products are removed from the marketplace. There have been some reported illnesses which may be associated with the consumption of these products.
