A fairly good turnout for an art reception held on Saturday in celebration of the 2018 local Art Adjudication winners, Erin Sidloski, Hannah Grieve and Rickee-Lee.

Soon-to-be graduating from Weyburn Comprehensive School, Hannah Grieve won with her abstract fabric collage pieces, a technique that was new to her at the time.

“After winning the adjudication with my fabric pieces, those were the first ones I'd ever did anything like that with,” she said. “So I kind of started, I wanted to elaborate into it more, because I wasn't sure about it at first but I thought that was maybe a good medium to learn more about and try some more stuff with.”

She said she has been busy with her education plans this fall, when she will be studying for a career in Social Work. Even though it’s not the arts per se, Grieve said there may be more a more arts-centred career path down the road.

“I hope to someday use the Social Work degree to get an Art Therapy degree, so I can kind of incorporate both,” she said.

Rickee-Lee is through her first year of a four-year degree program at the Alberta University of the Arts, formerly known as the Alberta College of Art and Design.

“I just finished all my classes, and so I took some glass-blowing, some sculpture, some drawing and painting, art history, I'm thoroughly enjoying all of it. Got to play around with some metal in sculpture and wood and yea, I'm really enjoying trying all new mediums," she said.

Known for her portrait work, Rickee-Lee won the 2018 with her portraits made from paper collage.

“They were really fun to do and I hope to do those some more, too," she said. "I just started working with some fibre and doing some fibre stuff so I'm going to play around with doing some fibre portraits as well going forward. You know I love the portraits but I'm trying different mediums to expand.”

Four of Erin Sidloski's works were purchased for the City of Weyburn's permanent art collection in 2018.  She was, however, unable to attend the event due to poor road conditions.

City Curator Regan Lanning announced at the event some changes to the local adjudication, which will now be held every two years, and will take place next in September and October of 2020.
