Service Dog Fundraiser for Nathan!

The community of Weyburn has a chance to come together to support a local family.

Michelle Roemer is setting up a fundraiser in order to get her brother, Nathan, the service dog he needs. The service dog will greatly improve Nathan's quality of life according to Michelle. Scooter the dog will cost the family $30,000 - a fee that includes the training and transitioning fees. Service dogs are commonly known to help blind people but they can, in fact, be trained to help people with a wide variety of issues. They are expensive because the training is so individualized.

"This process has already started. My brother has had a dog chosen for him; it is a labradoodle. His name is Scooter, my brother got to name him himself," said Michelle Roemer.

The lasagna supper fundraiser will be held Friday, May 26 at the legion. The evening will include a raffle and a 50/50 draw. Tickets are $25 each.

Nathan was born with two genetic disorders, Partial Trisomy 13Q and Partial Trisomy 11Q, which have affected his physical, emotional, intellectual and social development. Michelle reports the family has exhausted most other treatment options at this point but the family is hopeful a service dog will help Nathan live a more fulfilling life.

Nathan is 14 and has been raised in Weyburn. He loves music and enjoys putting on live concerts or D.J.ing for his friends and family. He also loves to read books and his favourite colour is red.

Michelle's number is 306-891-6299.
