The Premier of Saskatchewan announced earlier this week $7.5 million is to be portioned out to School Divisions of the province.

This has been seen as a positive move by those involved in Education in Weyburn.

"We are pleased that Premier Moe and Minister Wyant have recognised the priority that Education is and have responded in kind with additional funding midway through the year and then a promise of funding moving in to the next year so we are certainly grateful of that funding," said Lynn Little, Director of Education, Southeast Cornerstone Public School Division.

$345,000 is the amount SECPSD will be receiving.

The School Division has yet to decide where that funding will be going.

"We are just in the process of arranging to meet to sit down and determine where those additional supports will be placed. We have 38 schools, about 8300 students. We will be looking at evidence of student achievement, staff support, student support and making our determination."

In the past few years, the school division has seen funding cut across the whole education system including staffing at the division office level. Little said that SECPSD have worked hard to not make cuts in the classroom and so responsibilities have been added to job descriptions as staff retired last year without hiring anybody to refill those positions.

Little says they are anticipating the new budget on April 10th.

"We'll have a clear picture of what we have moving into next year, even with an injection of the $30 million back into education, that is still less than what was previously taken out. So we'll certainly continue to have work to do but it is better news than it could have been."
