To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Indigenous People's Day, the Weyburn Public Library will be hosting a digital screening of "Chaakapesh: The Trickster’s Quest", a documentary of an Indigenous-themed opera that was performed in Cree and Inuit communities in Nord-du-Québec.

"I feel like it is important to help people to learn a bit more about the Indigenous cultures and communities," expressed Jess Kelly, Adult Program Coordinator for the Weyburn and Estevan Public Libraries. "With this film, you can learn about Canada's history and the people that are within Canada."

The film premiered at the Festival du nouveau cinéma on October 19, 2019, and received special screenings in several indigenous communities in February 2020. It was screened at the 2020 Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival, where it was named runner-up for the Audience Choice Award for documentaries.

During this week and month, the Weyburn Public Library is celebrating the heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in Canada.

You can contact the Weyburn Public Library staff to register for the documentary film today and tomorrow. Then you will receive the link to watch the movie online from the comfort of your own home.

"After you have watched the documentary you can join us tomorrow on June 22nd at 5:00 PM to have a discussion over Zoom about the film," Kelly told.
