Those interested in making a difference within their community should consider applying for the Weyburn Youth Council.

As long as you are in grade 10, 11, or 12 and go to school in Weyburn you can send in an application to be a part of this incredible and impactful local group.

"So this will be year four or five for the Youth Council," explained Jeff Richards, Councilor with the City of Weyburn. "What we do is we get five folks from our high school and we use the Youth Council as a voice at City Council meetings. The Youth Council meets monthly and then their issues are brought forward to City Council and we take them seriously. They don't get to vote at City Council but they most certainly have influence there. Over the last few years, there have been a number of different initiatives that have been driven by the Youth Council. So we look forward to working with our future leaders that are shaping our communities."

If you are interested right now is the time to apply because the deadline is fast approaching on Friday, September 24, 2021, at midnight.

You can find the application form HERE and applications can be submitted by email to ptenbult@weyburn.ca or they can be dropped off at Weyburn City Hall.

"I would just encourage folks that want to make a difference in their community, who want to be leaders in their community, and maybe who want to go on to other types of leadership roles in the future to take a look at the Youth Council," Richards expressed. "Talk to some of your peers that have already served on it. We're one of very few in the province that does this."

As a member, students take part in City Council meetings, gain an understanding how municipal government works and represent the voice of Weyburn’s youth on a number of important topics.

Weyburn Youth Council meets once a month and Youth Councillors rotate a seat in City Council meetings every second and fourth Monday of the month.
