Alexis Ashworth of Oungre was recently named the Sask Sport Athlete of the Month for August.

This comes after her silver-medal finish at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham England this summer. She had finished second in the women’s 71-kilogram division, with a total lift of 214 kilograms.

Ashworth said she is honoured to have been named Sask Sport Athlete of the Month.

“It was exciting to hear this news on Monday,” Ashworth said. “Things have certainly calmed down since the games and I have had some time to reflect, and I am just so proud to have come from the province of Saskatchewan. Especially a small-town farming community.”

She added the support from friends, family and other beats any other province.

“And it’s the community, it’s like one big family and that support I feel will motivate me to continue to do my best as I have so many people rooting for me. It was just such a great experience that I got to be part of this summer and I learnt some valuable lessons about myself and how to handle a big stage for next time.”

This Saturday she competes in the North American Open Series 2 in Calgary, Alberta. She hopes to put up a better total to secure her spot on the World Championship Team with Canada in December.
