After weeks of investigation, the Weyburn Police Service made an arrest in the case of vandalized and damaged community mailboxes last week.

Last Wednesday, they arrest a person in connection with the vandalism. Acting Police Chief Rod Stafford explained the arrest came about after they learned some information while working on a different, and seemingly unrelated, case.

“As a result of that information then, and some more work done, the suspect was tied to the mailbox vandalism that’s been going on the last couple of weeks in the city, and charges have been laid in those incidents as well,” stated Stafford.

The suspect is facing a variety of charges, but Stafford pointed out it isn’t exactly a clear cut case of knowing the exact charges which will be laid in this situation.

“Some of those kinds of more obscure offences, like tampering with mail, don’t require the approval of the Crown prosecutor for the police to lay them, but because they are a bit obscure and fairly significant but at the same time complex to prosecute, we often reach out to the Crown to see if they would suggest, in a particular case, any additional charges,” Stafford added.

The investigation into the vandalism of community mailboxes was first reported by the police in late October and was said to have been taking place over a period of roughly four weeks.

At the time, Stafford noted the Weyburn Police Service was working with Canada Post Security in the investigation.
