The Weyburn Beavers returned to their winning ways Thursday night. After dropping two games, back to back, to the Melville Millionaires, they went to Swift Current and came away with an 8-2 victory.

The offence in the game was led by first baseman Drake Pilat, who had a home run in the first inning, and added an RBI single in the 7th. Keaton Greenwalt also hit a home run. His two-run blast came in the bottom of the ninth to put some insurance runs on the board.

The Beavers pulled away from the 57’s in the second inning as they put four runs on the board on two hits. It started with Cory Ewald being walked, then Cam Williams knocked a single to left field. Eric Morales loaded the bases with a single as the next batter. Two batters later, Luke Lubinieki was walked, bringing in Ewald, and leaving the bases loaded. An error by the first baseman on a hit by Corey Wheaton allowed two runs to score and moved Lubinieki to third. A wild pitch to Greenwalt allowed Lubinieki to score to close out the inning.

Chase Thometz made his first start as a Beaver in the game. He was hitless until the fourth inning when Bo McClintock had a single. Thometz would give up just one more hit in his six innings of work, a home run to Jerad Dokey. In his debut performance, Thometz allowed just the one run on two hits. He walked two and struck out five.

The Beavers would add runs in the seventh, with Pilat’s RBI single, and Greenwalt’s ninth-inning home run.

The bullpen finished off the game for Weyburn, with Brodie Stairs, Shandon Herrera and Eric Evans. Evans had the roughest go of the three, as he allowed three hits, but finished the inning giving up just one run. The run was just the second of the season allowed by the Beavers bullpen.

The Beavers will look to make it two wins in a row Friday night. They host the Yorkton Cardinals at Tom Laing Park. The first pitch is just after 7:00 p.m.
