A shakeup last week for the Red Wings locker room after a fourth straight loss. Head coach Kyle Haines decided to make a change to the leaders of the team after a 6–2 loss to Notre Dame.

"We made a drastic move last week after the last four games and stripped the letters. We had the guys vote on new leaders," he said.

Following that vote, 20-year-old Ty Brown was named the next captain of the Weyburn Red Wings.

"It's pretty special. I've played for four years now looking up to Josh Cronin and Mike Eskra. It means a lot."

Through three-and-a-half seasons as a Red Wing, Brown has played in a total of 225 games (including playoffs) and counting. He recently collected his 100th career point and is without question a guy that will do whatever it takes to help his team win.

Haines recognizes Brown's leadership qualities on and off the ice.

"Ty has been a long-time guy here. It's his fourth year-year and he's been through thick and thin the last four years," Haines said. "Ty will be wearing the 'C' and Tristan Petrie and Burke Johnstone will wear the assistants."

The Red Wings had gone nine games without a captain after Cade Kowalski was shipped to the Flin Flon Bombers. His last game as a Red Wing was on December 15. Brown donned the captaincy for the first time on January 25 and his teammates responded well.

While they fared well against two of the better teams in Nipawin and Melfort this past weekend, Brown knows they have to maintain that effort for the final 14 games.

"We need some consistency. We played two of the top teams and played very well, so we need to keep that going and get that last playoff spot," the captain said.

It's been a wild ride for Brown, from growing up and playing minor hockey in Weyburn, to playing for the Red Wings and now being named captain. Now we'll see if there's a storybook ending yet to be written for him and the Red Wings.
