After a very brief reprieve from the extreme cold, southeastern Saskatchewan will be headed back into the deep freeze again.

The temperature began plummeting yesterday and isn't expected to rise above -15 C until at least Friday.

"We're going to be getting an arctic ridge building back into Saskatchewan," Justin Shaer, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, said. "That's going to be bringing those frigid temperatures we recently experienced back to the province."

"Hopefully people have some good practices on how to avoid the cold, pretty much stay inside and avoid going outside at this point," he said. "It shouldn't be as prolonged of that really deep freeze we saw recently, it's just going to be a few nights of those really cold overnight lows and extreme wind chills."

Environment Canada is projecting Tuesday and Wednesday will be the chilliest day in the first cold snap in 2022 with daytime highs around -20 C and overnight lows around -30 C.

"If people are outside, dress in layers," he said. "Some synthetic material and wool materials are usually pretty good for wicking moisture away and keeping people feel dry which helps with warmth. Unfortunately, it seems like avoidance is one of the better practices, so hunkering down inside is one way to deal with it."

Shaer said the long-range weather models are showing a warm-up starting next week.
